Skin purging occurs when new products cause acne, pimples, or breakouts.
Skin purging can occur in a number of different places on the body and can be described as a sudden appearance of rashes, pimples, or red bumps (known as papules) which can take anywhere from two days to one week to heal. Skin purging is more common in those who suffer from acne-prone skin, but can also occur in other areas of the skin such as around the lips or on the forehead even if you don’t normally experience problematic skin due to factors like stress, genetic traits within your family or lifestyle habits.
It is not the same as a breakout. The former is a reaction to topical skin care products and treatments, while the latter usually happens when your skin is exposed to irritants. Skin purging is mostly common with active ingredients that contain hydroxyl acids like AHAs and BHAs, retinoid, benzoyl peroxide, and vitamin C. Purging is when your skin brings impurities, dirt, and oil to the surface all at once -- this burst of blemishes can seem like a breakout.
Whatever your skin type or skin concern, you’ve probably read a few things about various products or ingredients that can help you achieve your skin goals. Skin purging, however, is an automatic reaction to skincare products and treatment methods that will happen not just to some people but to all people who give skincare treatments with scientifically proven active ingredients a try.
There are times that purging is a sign that a product is working, but it is often misunderstood. There’s a fine line between skin purging and breakouts. If you’re not sure whether your skin is going through the former or if it’s just a bunch of bad luck, it may be time for a trip to the derma.
